The history of the U.S. dime dates back over 200 years when they were first authorized for production by the Coinage Act of 1792. The first 10-cent coins, referred to as “dismes,” were pattern coins not minted for circulation. Collecting U.S. dimes can be especially interesting due to the major types of designs and variations produced throughout America’s history. The first dime to be issued for regular use was the Draped Bust in 1796, followed by an updated Capped
Bust design in 1809. Except for the limited run of the Kingdom of Hawaii dimes in 1883 featuring King Kalākaua I, Lady Liberty reined on the U.S. dime in different forms until 1945 when she was replaced with the profile of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
