Also referred to as the Winged Liberty dime, the Mercury Dime was produced by the U.S. Mint from 1916 to 1945. The coin got its common name due to the similarity between young Lady Liberty on the obverse and the Roman god Mercury, both of whom have wings on the sides of their caps. Designed by German-born American sculptor Adolph Weinman, the reverse of the coin incorporates a Fasces, an ax made of a large bundle of wood sticks bound together. This ancient Roman symbol depicted strength in unity and makes for a visually unique and artistic design. Like the Barber dime before it, the Mercury dime was comprised of 90% silver and 10% copper.
