American Eagles (1986 - present)

The Silver American Eagle is a 1oz. bullion coin with a face value of one dollar. The obverse has Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty design used on the half dollars from 1916 until 1947. The reverse depicts an adaptation of a heraldic eagle by john Mercanti. Starting 2001, regular strike eagles have been minted at West Point and show no mintmark, while the Proofs minted at the same mint have the W mintmark. The Gold American Eagle bullion coins are made in four denominations that contain 1oz., 1/2oz., 1/4oz. and 1/10oz. of gold. The obverse displays Liberty, an adaptation of the Augustus Saint-Gaudens design used on twenty dollar gold coins. For the reverse, Miley Busiek designed a "family of eagles" with E PLURIBUS UNUM on the left and IN GOD WE TRUST on the right. Uncirculated Gold American Eagles are sold to authorized coin dealers at a high premium.
