Sacagawea Dollar (2000 - present)

The Sacagawea dollar depicts a young Native American Shoshone named Sacagawea, carrying on her back her infant son, Jean Baptiste. This motif symbolizes the spirit of liberty, freedom of spirit and peace shown by Sacagawea in guiding Meriwether Lewis and Williams Clark in their long expedition from the great northern plains to the Pacific. The obverse was designed by artist Glenna Goodacre. The reverse displays an eagle in flight, surrounded by 17 stars and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The denomination is below the eagle and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is in front of it. The reverse was designed by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. The dollar has a distinctive gold color and a plain edge. 22-karat gold specimens dated 2000-W were minted at West Point in 1999 using a reverse design with detailed tail feathers.
